This gathering of more than 40 poets and singers each year has kept its focus on the working cowboy and livestock oriented element of our western social structure and folk history. It is respected by the cowboy poets as one of the best gatherings in the country because they have done so much to maintain the true “working cowboy” culture and heritage. Award-winning cowboy poet and songwriter Darrell Arnold will present “Rhymin’ Notes and Warblin’ Throats: How to make Poems into Songs that Sell.” He will share his experience in transitioning poems into commercially successful songs.
For example, his poetry book A Bard in Boots was awarded the 2023 Will Rogers Gold Medallion Award for literary excellence. His collaboration with cowboy singer Tom Hiatt earned his poem/song “Never Cuss The Rain” the IWMA Working-Ranch-Cowboy Song-of-the-year award in 2023. Several other Arnold poems have been set to music by various artists. Two of them “Sing One For The Cowboy,”(2001) with Sons of the San Joaquin, and “The Pitchfork Grays,”(2018) with Jean and Gary Prescott, won IWMA Song-of-the-Year Awards.
