POETRY CONTEST AWARDS

WE CELEBRATE GREAT POETRY EVERY YEAR AT iwma'S ANNUAL CONVENTION IN NOVEMBER

RECOGNIZING OUTSTANDING MALE & FEMALE COWBOY POETS, THE COWBOY POETRY ALBUM OF THE YEAR AND THE BEST COWBOY POETRY BOOK

See below for a list of past recipients, and the criteria for each contest

Contest at the convention

Western Wordsmiths conducts a contest every year at the IWMA International Convention.  This is a contest to judge individual poets' recitations of their own original work.  Poets must recite his/her original poem.  Reading is not allowed.  Poets will have 1 1/2 to 4 minutes in which to present their selection, including any introduction.  Points will be deducted if the presentation exceeds four minutes.  Contestants will be judged on the following criteria:

Quality (technical structure, rhyme, meter, avoiding slant rhymes)

Theme (appropriate Western theme, regardless of era)

Delivery (inflection; diction; projection, stage presence, connection with audience)
